Geography
Welcome to the Geography page on our website. Miss Fisher is our Geography leader in school.
Intent
At St Theresa’s, our geography curriculum aims to give every child a strong sense of place and an understanding of where they live within the wider world. We strive to inspire a love of geography by fostering curiosity, awe and wonder about the world and its people.
Through the study of geography, pupils develop knowledge of diverse places, people and environments, alongside an understanding of key physical and human processes. We place great importance on our local area, providing opportunities for children to explore and investigate their surroundings, helping them to develop a sense of identity and appreciate what makes our community unique.
Our curriculum encourages pupils to ask questions, think critically and make comparisons between their local area and other regions of the UK and the wider world. By deepening their geographical understanding, we aim to help children recognise how the world is changing and their role in creating a more sustainable future.
Implementation
Our geography curriculum is delivered through carefully planned and sequenced units that build knowledge and skills progressively across each year group. Lessons are designed around key enquiry questions, encouraging pupils to explore, ask questions and develop a deeper understanding of the world. Teaching focuses on both geographical knowledge and skills, including map reading, fieldwork, data collection and interpretation. Key vocabulary is explicitly taught, and pupils are given regular opportunities to revisit prior learning to support retention.
Where possible, we make links across the curriculum and use our local area to provide meaningful, first-hand learning experiences. This helps to bring geography to life and allows pupils to make connections between their learning and the real world.
Impact
By the time pupils leave St Theresa’s, they will have a secure understanding of key geographical knowledge and concepts, including their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world. They will be able to talk confidently about their learning, using appropriate geographical vocabulary.
Pupils will demonstrate curiosity about the world, ask thoughtful questions and show an understanding of how people and environments are interconnected. They will be able to apply their skills in map reading, fieldwork and data interpretation, preparing them for the next stage of their education and helping them to become informed, responsible global citizens.
Progression Documents
The documents below show how the geographical substantive and disciplinary knowledge progresses throughout the school, from EYFS to Year 6.
